Only a week after the substantial spring update, Apple had to release one security patch for iOS 14.5.1. The reason is two zero-day security holes in the WebKit, which allows hackers to attack updated devices. For the same reason they also arrive iPadOS 14.5.1, macOS Big Sur 11.3.1 and watchOS 7.4.1.
Apple forced to release the security patch after only a week: iOS 14.5.1 arrives
As reported by Apple itself, the new versions of the operating system fix two vulnerabilities in the code of the engine for the WebKit browser. The vulnerabilities are described that two codes: CVE-2021-30663 e CVE-2021-30665. The former is described as an integral overflow problem, while the latter a memory corruption issue. Both of these vulnerabilities would have allowed cybercriminals to execute malicious code through targeted web content.
According to Apple's analysis, some attackers may already having actively exploited this flaw. So the company urges all users to update. The same goes for the recent iPad, Mac and Apple Watch updates: iPadOS 14.5.1, macOS Big Sur 11.3.1 and watchOS 7.4.1 should be downloaded now.
In addition to solving the security issues, the system update also issues issues regarding the app tracking control.
How to download the update
Even without receiving system notifications, you can speed up the update with the security patch on all your Apple products.
- On iPhone and iPad: go to Settings -> General -> Software Updates and select the latest available version of the operating system.
- On MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and all other Apple computers: Click on the Apple menu icon and go to System Settings -> Software Updates
- Per Apple Watch: on your iPhone, go to the Watch app or to Settings -> Software Updates on the Apple Watch.
Although the chances of having downloaded malware are low, it is worth updating as soon as possible. The process shouldn't take long as this is a security patch.
