When is the fishing tournament
Unlike previous games, it looks like the second Saturday of the month is the chosen one for the Animal Crossing: New Horizons fishing tournament. We'll have to wait and see if this becomes a template, but for now you should be ready for April 11. Especially for players from the northern hemisphere who have already moved a few villagers to their island. Whether it's the day for you or not, you can always know when the next one is via your island bulleting board. If one comes next week, a notice will be posted with the date. As for the time of day, CJ should appear bright and early in the morning, so be ready to start fishing as soon as you get up. CJ will be surrendering after 18 p.m. so you only have to claim all the prizes until then.
How the fishing tournament works
Once you're ready and ready, head over to Resident Services to speak with CJ.He should have his tent and gear set up and is going to smash everything. Basically you can participate in a game of the Fishing Tournament for 500 Bells, although your first time is free. Once you start a round, you have three minutes to catch as many fish as possible. Each fish earns you one point with two bonus points awarded for catching at least three fish. It doesn't matter what type of fish they are, so don't worry about devouring a paddlefish or other rare species. Just go to the nearest body of water and start throwing your bobber.
Once you've earned points, you can start spending them on tournament prizes. Ten points receive a random prize, all of which are geared around the fish in the game. There's a lot to be won, including some big trophies that you'll definitely want to flaunt, so be prepared to earn a ton of points early on. We'll have more specific tips on how to win the Fishing Tournament closer to the event, but for now, here's how to start preparing.
How to prepare for the fishing tournament
The key to landing the most fish during the fishing tournament will be the bait. We've covered everything here, but basically you need to start digging up Japanese clams and turning them into bait right now. You'll also want to stock up on extra fishing rods as they can break during the tournament and you don't want to have to search for gear. Each three-minute round will likely eat through a stack of ten or more baits, which would result in about one rod every three sessions.
You can use it anywhere, but we recommend the closest body of water or the Southern Ocean as time is running out. You want to fish right away, but sprinting down the map will actually make it easier to catch the fish, as they are usually facing up and will be easy to catch without repositioning. You end up selling these fish to CJ for the usual premium price, so if you need the Bells, try fishing near the pier to get the most valuable fish.
If you start Saturday April 11 with a ton of bait and fishing rods, you should be good to go. But check back for more as the event draws closer.
