How to get the fishing rod
At the start of your visit to Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island, you will not have any tools. There are some quick ways to get them, though, although they aren't the best in the game. The first version of any items you acquire will be "shaky", so for a start you will get the shaky fishing rod. It will work, but be sure to upgrade or get the best version when it's available much further into the game (i.e. days spent playing).
To get the fishing rod, you have two options. The fastest and easiest way is to craft it by following Tom Nook's advice at the start of the game (see below). However, later on you can always buy one from Nook's Cranny. This shop, run by Timmy and Tommy, has a lot of useful items, but sometimes not everything is available. Check in as much as possible and they should have the fishing rod soon enough. There are many important items on offer in the cabinet at the top left of the store. If they don't have it, you'll be stuck with option 2, which is crafting.
How to make the fishing rod
We have already told you how to craft items, so check it out if you are not sure. The recipe for the Fragile Fishing Rod requires five tree branches to create. Shake or hit the trees to get them if you need them, then come back to create your new fishing rod. Alternatively, there are events that will reward a fishing rod, but by then you will have missed out on a lot of great fishing.
