Among Us is certainly shaping up to be one of the most popular indie films of 2020, if not the most popular of 2020. Although released in 2018, the game only recently skyrocketed to the top of sales and amassed over 40 million downloads, as of September 2020. Many people are wondering if the three-person development team behind the project, Innersloth, has plans for a sequel and the response is much better than it looks .
Development details
In August 2020, the small team posted a letter on their site confirming that Among Us 2 would be on the way, guaranteeing it would be a "worthy sequel." This meant more modes and fewer bugs to keep the franchise popular. As great as it sounds, that dream won't come true - at least in the form of Among Us 2.
Changing their minds, the trio quickly decided a month later to cancel the sequel entirely, but not because the demand wasn't there. “We decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead focus on improving Among Us 1,” a September 2020 blog post read.
In the age of games becoming live services (i.e. Fortnite or Warzone), it's clear the Innersloth gang didn't want the Among Us brand to be bogged down by the back-to-back pressure every now and then. Rather, his rabid fans can expect a lot more content to come to the title they already own.
Specifications
With what would have been the sequel content now transferred to Among Us, both posts provided an in-depth look at how the indie sensation will ultimately turn into a larger experience. Of all the features advertised, the biggest eye-catcher Innersloth alluded to is something that's a more complex “main add-on” than Crewmate vs Imposter.
For now, the team aims to quickly improve what is already in the current version. This includes a fix for server issues, a new step, a "friend / account system" and support for color blind - changes also intended for among us 2. If that doesn't impress, the September article mentions planning “a lot of other stuff too,” but said fans should stay tuned for now.
Release date
It's safe to say Among Us 2 as fans knew he's dead and buried, but that doesn't mean the original will come out so quietly. According to Innersloth, the aforementioned planned features could see the light of day in the next six months at least. When Among Us 2 was announced, the team pointed out that “Among Us took six months to enter open beta” and that its sequel will likely be just as long.
With the focus on the original game, gamers should expect the planned sequel content to expand only on Among Us's exceptional level of popularity in 2021. As the game's creators do a job solid to keep fans in the know, updates on the redesign should be frequent.
