Windows 10 Too Slow: How To Speed Up System Boot

Windows 10 is too slow to start? Do you have to wait several minutes before you can take control? Whether you have a large setup, or a very small PC, here's how to speed up the system launch.

Since the first editions of Windows, Microsoft has always wanted to save its users time when starting up or shutting down the system ... Sometimes with success (Windows XP, Windows 7 ...), and sometimes with some disappointments (Windows Vista , which is remembered for its extreme slowness). Under Windows 10, Microsoft has completely ignored the start menu, the one that usually runs just after Bios or UEFI. Fortunately, it is still possible to access Windows 10 Safe Mode, but it is now well hidden.

Despite all these attempts to boost Windows 10 startup, the computer may show some signs of weakness, especially on small configurations, or even on more powerful PCs, but on which applications have accumulated. Because many are the programs which install components which will launch at the same time as Windows 10. Look no further: you have found one of the main causes of slow system startups. It is therefore time to clean up by removing all these applications that contaminate Windows 10. As with our article devoted to cleaning Windows 10, we have decided here not to install any application. We will only use tools provided by Microsoft as a base, since it is precisely a question of gaining speed and efficiency, and not polluting Windows 10 with so-called optimization tools.

Disable unnecessary programs that launch when Windows 10 starts

As new applications are installed, Windows 10 finds itself overwhelmed by software that launches as soon as the desktop appears. Sometimes some are looking for an update, sometimes they are running in the background, in order to gain speed when you want to launch them. What may seem beneficial for the user is not necessarily beneficial for the operating system. To sort through the apps that run when Windows 10 starts up, follow these steps:

  1. From the launch of Windows 10 and using the right mouse button, click on the taskbar. Select option Task Manager. You can also call this same manager by pressing the traditional key combination [CTRL] + [ALT] + [SUPPR].
  2. Click on Plus de détails at the bottom left. Go to the tab Performance. There you can see how your resources are used. If, at the launch of Windows 10, you notice significant "spikes" in performance (exceeding 80%, or even reaching 100%), it is because one or more programs load automatically and monopolize all the resources.
  3. Always since Task Manager, this time click on the tab Start-up. Here you will find a list of all the programs which load when Windows 10 is launched. By clicking with the right button on the title line (name, editor, status, etc.), you can add various information. , such as exact start-up time, start-up type, switch-off time, etc.
  4. Each application has a startup impact rating. This shows you the resources required by the application to launch Windows 10. From this dashboard, you can disable the most demanding programs. To do this, click with the right button on one of the programs on the screen, and select the function deactivate.
  5. How do you know if a program is needed or not? Of course, do not disable the antivirus or the drivers and managers of your devices. However, if your computer is really slow, you can turn off any programs that check for an update. This is the case for example with Adobe software, Java, etc. However, from time to time you will need to manually check for an update for these same programs. Also remove the tools that are supposed to keep your PC running smoothly (CCleaner in the screenshot below). Finally, you can also disable programs that you only use very rarely (VMware in our example).
  6. If you are in doubt about the origin of any software that runs when Windows 10 starts up, you can always check which app it is attached to. For this, always since Task Manager and the tab Start-up, right-click on one of the programs and select the function Open file location. Explorer opens directly to the folder where the executable is located, which should allow you to see what software the same executable is attached to.
  7. Finally, for the sake of completeness, note that it is also possible to deactivate applications from the Settings module of Windows 10. Go to the menu Start, plus click on the Parameters, and select the function Applications. See you finally on Start-up. Here you have the means to activate or deactivate the applications which run at the launch of Windows 10. A module perhaps clearer and simpler than the Task Manager, but which is not as complete, unfortunately .
