Windows 10 on a calculator: it's possible and here's how!

Windows 10 on a calculator, it is possible and the exploit was carried out by a developer who managed to put a variation of the OS there. The hacker did not resist the curiosity to find out how the system behaves on a technically limited device with a screen of 320 x 240 px.

The version of Windows 10 Optimized for ARM processors has opened up the possibilities and continues to stimulate the creativity of some developers who are trying things that were unimaginable a few years ago. This is how the OS was successfully ported to the Raspberry Pi. A hacker also managed to replace Android with Windows 10 on the OnePlus 6T. Did you believe this possible on a calculator? Well, a developer by the name of Ben (@imbushuo on Twitter) had the crazy idea of giving it a go.

The project is not going without a hitch, but it is still on the right track. The calculator that is the subject of this hack is an HP Prime Graphing Calculator. As the name suggests, this is a more advanced graphing calculator than a classic scientific calculator. However, the bet was not won in advance.

Windows 10: Microsoft's OS invites itself on the most unlikely devices

According to Ben, the calculator was hacked to launch Windows 10 IoT Core, a version of the OS which is the clear expression of Microsoft's desire to make its system multiplatform. This edition is designed to work on small-sized connected objects with or without a screen: connected thermostats, Smart Hub, connected locks, etc. After successfully installing Windows 10 on his calculator, Ben explains that a first attempt to boot the system ended in failure, the cause of which was impossible to diagnose at first. The 320 x 240 px screen was indeed too small to display the error code in full.

A few hacks later, the hurdle was cleared and the developer managed to gain access to Windows 10 Boot Manager. Technical details of this feat were not disclosed, but we are curious to see how the OS behaves. on a calculator with only 256MB of RAM. For this, we will have to be a little patient since the boot manager stage is the last that Ben posted on his Twitter account. The project is still ongoing and we will certainly know more about its progress in the days to come.
