WhatsApp may soon have its own iPad app, a first for the messaging platform. This new application would be part of the multi-device support extended that WhatsApp has been implementing in the last period.
WhatsApp will also arrive on iPads
As part of WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption scheme there is a requirement for users to configure the service with a phone as the “primary” device. The company announced in July that it is working on the next generation cryptography, to allow a true multi-device connection without requiring the presence of a smartphone. As part of that, it appears that WhatsApp is planning a fully native iPad app for the first time.
AppleInsider spotted a few tweets this weekend from the WABetaInfo account, an unofficial source that often previews future WhatsApp features. The account claims that as part of the upcoming multi-device beta, both iPad and Android tablets can be used for the first time as “linked devices” to a WhatsApp account. A follow-up tweet states that it will be a native app (rather than a web app) and that it will work "independently" (as it will work if the smartphone is offline).
It is unknown when this app and integration will arrive. The WABetaInfo account says that is under development and will be released in a "future update". But if you already have the beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, you will also have access to the version for iPad. Many people who have been using WhatsApp for years have probably gotten used to the app not being available on tablets, but multi-device support seems like the perfect time to get WhatsApp to work on multiple devices. Including iPads.
