2020 was undoubtedly the most successful year of streaming platforms. As you can imagine, social distancing has convinced more and more users around the world to take out at least one subscription to one of these services. In this regard, just last week Disney Plus announced that it has passed i 100 millions of subscribers in just 16 months. Launched in November 2019 in the United States, the service managed to achieve the goal the company set itself to achieve in at least five years.
Accomplices the pandemic and the lockdown, which have also grown the audience of Netflix, a direct competitor of the Disney platform. Just a few months ago, Reed Hastings stated that his service has reached i 203.7 millions of subscribers. An important milestone, without a doubt. But what makes us think is that Disney + has managed to reach the same number of subscribers in just over a year that Netflix has gained in a decade. And if the growth trend of the service continues, it is likely that the Disney platform will hold the scepter in the world of on-demand streaming in the future.
Disney Plus will overtake Netflix by 2024: Ampere Analysis forecasts
“Disney + obviously recorded one of the fastest growth seen by a subscription video-on-demand service; kudos to them for establishing themselves as a global force so quickly. Although Disney + is still only half the size of Netflix, it has achieved that milestone in an unprecedented amount of time. " So Richard Broughton, an Ampere Analysis analyst, commented on the incredible growth of Disney's streaming service. And Ampere herself recently shared a prediction on the future of platforms.
Apparently, Disney Plus will overtake Amazon Prime Video - which currently boasts 147 million subscribers - within a few years. For its part, Netflix should hold the leadership of the sector at least until 2024, when the Disney platform - which also includes the services of Hulu and Espn + - will exceed 295 million subscribers. At that point, the Hastings service will be forced to give way, while maintaining a decent second place in the industry, with 279 million subscribers.
How Disney's streaming service is growing
Considering the forecasts, the success of the platform could seem almost surprising, especially if we focus on the proposal offered to the public. In January of 2021, Disney + offered its subscribers 4500 hours of content, compared to Netflix's 40 and Amazon's 50. A somewhat reduced offer, which cannot even compete with the reality show “Keeping up with the Kardashians”, which alone offers 6000 hours of streaming. Clearly, if the proposal were to remain this, it is quite impossible that the predictions made on the growth of the platform can be realized.

The company has already moved in this direction, promising to add to the streaming service over 100 new titles every year. And to be able to retain its subscribers and earn more, Disney Plus launched last month Star, a new streaming channel for adults that has been added to the other five of the brand: Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel e National Geographic. In order to achieve its growth objectives, the service had to expand its offer by adding a channel with 249 films and 42 series, including many FOX and ABC productions. In this way, the service has tried to broaden the offer for its subscribers (present and future) and, given the numbers, it also seems to have succeeded.
At this point, it would really seem that Disney Plus is on the path to success. And if the content offer continues to grow like this in the next few months, then Netflix may really have to hand over the lead to its competitor. This would mean only one thing: Disney + could achieve in less than ten years the success that other platforms have achieved in at least two decades.
