Tutorial - How to use the Windows 10 "Your Phone" application? Through Jerome Cartegini Published on 05/03/20 at 16:00 p.m. Share: Comment (12)

Little known, the Windows 10 Your Phone app interconnects an Android smartphone, or to a lesser extent an iPhone with a PC. It offers the possibility of synchronizing your photos or sending and receiving SMS on the big screen.

Installed by default for just under a year on Windows 10, the Your Phone app works through a mobile app for Android and iOS smartphones. Note, however, that on the latter, the app boils down to authorizing the sending to the PC of web pages viewed on iPhone via Microsoft Edge. Interest at least limited due to locks in Apple's mobile operating system. For now, Microsoft is therefore concentrating all its efforts on the development of the Android version which has much more relevant features.

From phone to pc

Switching from phone to PC with ease, that's the promise of Your Phone developed by Microsoft. If this application was initially limited to access to photos from the smartphone on a PC, it was then enriched with new features such as sending and receiving SMS, or the display of notifications from Android apps on the desktop of the PC. The Assistant Your Phone companion app for Android has also evolved with a new function that eliminates the need for a Wi-Fi connection and connects directly via the smartphone's mobile data plan. Here is how to install the application and take advantage of its various features.

Getting started with your phone

Click the PC Start menu button, then select Your Phone from the list of applications that appears. Note that if this is not available, it can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft Store. Once launched, you must associate the application for PC with a Microsoft account (Hotmail, Live, Outlook, etc.) by entering your credentials. Validate, then enter your phone number in order to receive a link by SMS offering the download of the Android app. Click on the link to download and install the dedicated Assistant Your Phone - Windows application from the Google Play Store. To finish, all you have to do is validate the various authorizations displayed on the screen of the mobile terminal aiming to access photos, multimedia content, files, contacts and SMS directly on Windows 10. The application also displays the battery level. the phone and its wallpaper (only on certain models).

Manage smartphone photos on the big screen

Once all the authorizations have been validated, the synchronization between the smartphone and the PC is carried out automatically in the background. Microsoft says syncing can impact battery life. Then just select the Photos tab in Your phone to view the smartphone photos on the big screen. This tab can display up to 2 photos and screenshots taken with the mobile device or stored in its Camera menu. In addition to viewing the photos, a right-click allows you to save the visuals on the PC, or to share them with devices located nearby (via a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection), on social networks, or even by email . However, it is not possible to delete the photos using the PC. A function which would however have the advantage of facilitating the management of photos from the smartphone.

Send / receive SMS

As its name suggests, the Message tab allows you to manage your SMS directly on the big screen. This is a real plus, especially for writing messages quickly using the computer keyboard. It is also possible to send / receive MMS and manage attachments. When receiving a message, a banner is automatically displayed on the PC screen. The configuration menu, accessible via the logo in the form of a small notched wheel at the bottom left of the application, allows you to activate / deactivate the various functions relating to messages. To send a letter, all you have to do is click on New message, select a contact by entering the first letters of his name in the dedicated field at the top right of the window, then write it in the Enter a message field at the bottom on the right of the screen. As on a smartphone, it is possible to add emojis, GIFs and visuals stored on the smartphone.

Manage notifications

Finally, your phone offers a third function to manage smartphone notifications directly in Windows 10. These are both listed in the Notifications tab and displayed in pop-ups on the computer screen. The Settings menu allows you to select the smartphone apps that can display notifications. Unlike photos, photos can be deleted with the Your Phone app. An additional interaction between the smartphone and the PC very practical to use on a daily basis.

Receiving and making calls is coming soon!

Announced last December, a new function allowing you to make and receive calls from your smartphone on Windows 10 should be available soon by the benefits of an update. Compatible with Android versions 7 or later of the OS, the application will notably offer the possibility from a PC to dial a number or to select a contact in the smartphone's address book to contact him. The log and call transfers will also be accessible directly on the big screen. Note that communications will pass through the PC microphone and speakers via a Bluetooth connection.
