That's the main downside to Red Dead Online right now - shootouts are super lethal, and rifle accuracy is the only factor that matters. Get a photo anyone can take and you win. Playing with a free objective changes everything, and you will find that enemy players are actually missing out on shots in chaotic free-for-all battles. This is one of the most requested changes and it has been around forever.
There are hidden lobbies and by changing your settings you will automatically bring players closer to the same settings as you. Let's dive into the details below.
How to play on free-goal lobbies »useful wiki Disable auto-aim guide
To play in a Free objective lobby, you must turn off auto aim settings menu. Auto aim is enabled by default, even on PC. There are some hidden lobbies in this game - when auto aim is on, you match up with other auto aim players. If disabled, you match players who are auto-aim disabled. It doesn't say that all over the game, so if you're totally confused I don't blame you.
- From the main menu and open Controls -> Controller Settings -> Targeting & Weapons
- Replace the "Locking mode (on foot)" with "Free objective"
- Replace the "Locking mode (mounting / vehicle)" by "Free objective"
If you don't change these two settings, it won't work. You can only change these settings in Story Mode or from the main menu. When you log in you will now enter free-aim halls where everyone must aim - no auto-aim is allowed. Controllers won't have huge advantages, and PC gamers can shoot freely. Personally, I think it greatly improves the experience. Just try it out to see what it looks like.
