Originally launched to replace Hangouts, Google Duo is a free video chat application via the Internet available on Android, iOS and Web version, and therefore usable on mobile (tablet and phone) as well as on computer. Faced with the competition (Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, Discord, etc.), it has some interesting advantages: video in HD (up to 720p), graphics optimization for low bandwidth networks, group chat up to 'to eight people. Free, Duo only requires registration with a smartphone number or a Google account. It is also often installed by default on recent Android smartphones.
Install the Google Duo app on mobile
- Go to the Play Store to download Google Duo to your Android smartphone or to the App Store to download the app to your iPhone or iPad.
- Once the app is installed, open Google Duo.
- Click I agree on the High Quality Video Calls with Duo window.
- Allow access to your camera and microphone. You will also have to allow access to your contacts to have the list, and allow notifications in the event of a call.
- Then save your phone number.
- Finally, a validation code will be sent to you by SMS. Enter it to complete the installation.
Make a video call with Google Duo
- On launch, the application opens directly on the camera and on your contact list.
- Choose the contact to call.
- In his contact card, click the blue button Video call at the bottom of the screen to initiate the call.
- You can also make an audio call with the button Voice call or send a video message with the button Message.
Make a group video call with Google Duo
- In the main Duo screen, first press Create a group.
- Select the group participants, then click OK.
- In the group window, click on Group to change the name and find it easily later.
- Press the blue button Start to start the group video call
Make a video call with the web version of Google Duo
The web version of Google Duo does not require download or specific registration. This is the version to use on a computer, whether under Windows, macOS or Linux. However, group calls are not available on the web version.
- With your usual web browser, go to the Google Duo site.
- Click the button Try Duo for the Web in the upper right corner to log in.
- Once connected, enter your phone number if you want your contacts to be able to find you easily.
- If you want to receive calls, turn on notifications.
- Click the name of the contact to call from the list displayed on the home page.
- Allow access to your camera and microphone, if you haven't already.
- In the pop-up window, click the button Video call.
