How to start the Hitman 3 murder mystery
To start the murder mystery, you must first disguise yourself as the private investigator Alexa Carlisle hired to investigate Zachary's death. At the start of the mission, he is near the front door of the estate. He will go through the front door after being patted by the guards, then he will enter the hallway on the right where you can grab him alone and take his clothes. If you go up to the open window to the right of the main entrance, you can wait for him there.
Once you disguise yourself as a private investigator, head to the lobby and speak to Alexa Carlisle. After explaining the situation, speak to Mr. Fernsby the butler and he will escort you to Zachary's room so you can begin your investigation. To recap, here's how to start the Dartmoor Murder Mystery in Hitman 3.
- Disguise yourself as a private investigator.
- Talk to Alexa Carlisle in the lobby.
- Speak to Mr. Fernsby to begin your investigation.
- Follow Mr. Fernsby to Zachary's room.
Once in Zachary's room, it's time to start looking for clues.
Zachary's bedroom clues
There are six clues in total in Zachary's room
- Zachary's body
- Whiskey glass and bottle
- Zachary's suicide note
- Zachary's laptop
- Secret room
- Mansion floor plan
Begin your investigation by scanning Zachary's body with your camera. Then scan the glass and bottle of whiskey on the nightstand next to him. From there, inspect Zachary's laptop on a nearby desk and take Zachary's suicide note on a nearby table. Finally, examine the shelf and pull out one of the books to reveal a secret room. In this secret passage, you can find the mansion floor plan.
Back to Mr. Fernsby
Once you're done in Zachary's room, it's time to head back to the butler and ask him for leads. Return to the hall where your investigation began. Mr. Fernsby should wait there for the duration of the mission if you ever need to find him. Talk to him and ask him for more information to get your next leads. He suggests that you interrogate family members and search their rooms for clues. It's time to explore.
Clues from Emma and Gregory's bedroom
The Emma and Gregory room is located on level 1 in the northwest area of the building. The door is locked, so you'll have to find a way to enter. There is a crowbar just outside the greenhouse that you can use to break the lock and get in, but you can also exit through the open window nearby and make your way if you prefer to do things leisurely.
There are four clues to find in Emma and Gregory's room.
- Letter from Emma's mother
- Greenhouse keyring
- Bulldog cane
- Shoes and footprints
All the evidence is on display, so it shouldn't be too hard to find. Just be sure to scan the shoes and footprints on the floor with your camera before you go.
Clues from Rebecca's bedroom
The Rebecca room is located on level 1 in the south-eastern part of the building. The door is locked, but you can exit through the next window and move along the ledge to access the room through an open window.
There are two clues to be found in Rebecca's room.
- Rebecca's notebook
- Rebecca's laptop
There isn't a lot of evidence here, but it's still important to the case. Interact with Rebecca's laptop, then scan Rebecca's laptop with your camera. Now is the time to come downstairs and see what Mr. Fernsby was doing on the night of the murder.
Clues from Mr. Fernsby's office
Mr. Fernsby's office is located on the ground floor of the building near the staff room. The door is locked and unfortunately there are no windows or alternate routes you can take to enter. You have to open the locked door somehow, and the Crowbar that you can find outside near the greenhouse is your best bet. The door is insulated and no one will see you breaking the lock anyway.
There are three clues to be found in Mr. Fernsby's office.
- Zachary's half-burnt journal
- Mr. Fernsby's List
- Mr. Fernsby's pills
This evidence is essential to the investigation. Take Zachary's half-burnt newspaper from the fireplace. Then take Mr. Fernsby's list and Mr. Fernsby's pills. If you collect everything in this room, you will have enough evidence to charge Mr. Fernsby with the murder.
The greenhouse clues
Based on the evidence found in the Emma and Gregory room, it's a good idea to visit the greenhouse behind the estate. You will need to use the nearby Crowbar to open one of the doors, so be careful and don't let anyone see you.
There are two clues to find in the greenhouse.
- Laboratory equipment
- Poison dosage table
Lab equipment sits on the table and it's pretty hard to miss. The poison dosage board sits on the table to the right of the lab equipment, and you need to use your camera to scan it. If you collect all the evidence here, you will discover the identity of the murderer.
Who killed Zachary?
When you sit down to present your results to Alexa Carlisle, you have three options.
- Accuser Emma
- Accuser M. Fernsby
- Accuser Zachary
One of the three options will please Alexa Carlisle and will earn you a reward, but Emma is the real murderer. You can accuse Mr. Fernsby or Zachary of being the real murderer, and Alexa Carlisle will buy your story anyway. Each of the three options will complete the mission story of the motive, means, and opportunity.
Once the investigation is complete, you will be able to choose a reward. The best option is to request the folder because the other choices really don't earn you anything. If you ask for the file, Alexa Carlisle will realize that you are in fact Agent 47, but she will express surprise that you helped her instead of killing her. She will enter the security code and allow you to retrieve the file before heading out to the balcony for some privacy. You can follow her outside for easy accidental death if you push her, or you can take care of her as you see fit.
