The continuous Google research in the field of Machine Learning is the basis of many of the products used every day by hundreds of millions of people, from Google Translate to Search within photos to Inbox Smart Reply.
One of the things that makes these advances possible is the collaboration between Google researchers around the world, which pool a unique wealth of information and ideas on cutting-edge technologies and methods in the field of Machine Learning, with the aim of developing useful tools and products.
In this regard, today Google announces the birth of a research group dedicated to Machine Learning in Europe, based in the Zurich office. Google Research Europe will foster the creation of an environment in which Machine Learning engineers and researchers will have the opportunity to develop products and conduct research in Europe as part of Google's global commitment in this field.
Europe is home to some of the most prestigious scientific universities in the world and is therefore the ideal place to form a high-level research team. We look forward to collaborating with the excellent computer science projects being developed in the region and we hope to make our contribution to the academic community through our publications and academic support.
Says Emmanuel Mogenet, head of the European “Google Research” division. In addition to continuing the collaboration with the various Google search teams, the European team will focus on three core areas:
- Machine Learning
- Natural language learning and processing
- Artificial perception
In these areas, the team will actively work on the improvement of the Machine Learning infrastructure, thus facilitating research and subsequent practical application. In addition, researchers from the Zurich office will be able to work closely with the linguist team, with the goal of advancing natural language learning in partnership with Google research groups around the world.
