How many strokes does it take to break the tools
We don't have full numbers yet, but some players have mapped out the exact number of hits it takes to smash various tools. Knowing this will be important for the trick below, so try to memorize these numbers.
Fragile fishing rod - 10 fish
Flimsy Net – 10 bugs
Fragile Ax - 40 hits
Fragile shovel - 40 results
Fishing rod - 30 fish
Bug Net - 30 bugs
Ax and stone ax - 100 shots
Shovel - 100 shots
So after catching 10 fish or hitting a tree / rock 30 times, your fragile tool will break. But if you stop one before that, you can extend its life by upgrading it. How to extend the life of tools
The trick to extending the life of tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that upgrading, or even customizing, resets the hit counter completely. So let's say you make a fragile fishing rod and immediately upgrade it. You will be able to catch 30 fish before it breaks. However, if you use the Fragile Fishing Rod to catch 9 fish and then upgrade it, you will be able to catch 30 more for a total of 39 fish. The same goes for the ax, allowing you to hit trees or rocks 29 times before leveling up and getting 100 more.
