Adobe Digital Edition (For reading books with DRM)

To read Adobe DRM-blocked eBooks (but other companies as well), we are required to use Adobe Digital Edition (ADE). The application, free, is available in of the country for Windows and Mac OS directly from Adobe. For other operating systems (GNU / Linux, BSD ...), forget direct use and try via Wine or full Windows virtualization.

To use this software correctly, the device must be associated with an Adobe identifier which combines an email address and a password. The first time, just go to the Adobe site on the dedicated page to create the identifier. Then, you must enter the email address and password in ADE. However, there are some issues with this app.

Authorize the computer

  • Open ADE
  • Go to menu Help and Authorize the computer (or CTRL + Shift + U)
  • Choose the eBook supplier (in our case Adobe ID which is pre-chosen)
  • Enter email address as Adobe ID
  • Enter the password (beware of typos)
  • Click on Authorize

Create an Adobe ID

You just have to go to the dedicated page to register for free.

Limit on the number of authorizations

The purpose of DRM is to exercise strict and restrictive control, it is not possible to use ADE on more machines (Windows and Mac combined). If two machines are already declared, it will be necessary to remove the authorization on one in order to be able to authorize a new one.

Consequently, to avoid later trouble, if you get rid of a machine (breakage, transfer or resale), before giving it up, think about removing its authorization.

Remove authorization

In ADE:

  • Go to menu Help and Clear authorization (or CTRL + Shift + D)

This is the simple method.

Removal of recalcitrant authorization

It is possible that removing the authorization is an impossible task! By dint of searching, here is the solution that I experimented with, a much more complicated method but the only one:

  • Open ADE on the machine to be deleted
  • authorization information (CTRL + Maj + I or via Aide)
  • The authorization is then displayed according to the following diagram:
    • email | Adobe ID (urn: uuid: string-of-numbers-and-letters)
  • Copier series-of-numbers-and-letters (without parentheses)
  • Launch regedit (for the registry)
  • Start a search in the registry (menu Edit / Search ou CTRL + F)
  • Coller series-of-numbers-and-letters
  • Validate and wait
  • Delete the key found
  • Continue research via F3
  • Delete the new key found
  • Continue until you find nothing more (3 occurrences)
  • Start a new search by copying / pasting email address (one occurrence)
  • Close the registry (i.e. regedit)
  • Relaunch ADE
  • Clear authorization (CTRL + Shift + D or via Help)
  • Send

A new display of information on the authorization (CTRL + Shift + I or via Help) must then show that there is no authorization and wait for the authorization to be entered.
