Charge your smartphone for a few minutes
When an Android smartphone or tablet no longer turns on, the problem can be either hardware or software. But the first thing to do is to check that the battery has not discharged, even if you charged the device not long ago. It may be that your battery is damaged and good for a replacement or simply that it has discharged faster than usual.
The first thing to do is therefore to verify that this is not where the problem is coming from by connecting your phone to a wall charger. If so, then your phone screen should light up very quickly and the device should restart after a few minutes as soon as you press the Power button. However, if this method does not work, try another charger or, another outlet, because it is not impossible that your charger needs to be replaced or your power source defective.
Force restart your smartphone
Well, we agree, fewer and fewer smartphones offer a removable battery, but if you are still lucky enough to have it then remove it. Sometimes the system may be locked up and simply need to turn off the power for a few moments before reinserting the battery and then turning your phone back on as you usually do using the power button.
Long press the Power button
If your smartphone does not offer a removable battery, it is nevertheless possible to do the same thing by making a long press on the Power button. Press the button for at least 10 seconds, this should be enough to force the device to turn off. You will then just have to turn it back on after a few seconds. If the failure persists, the problem is likely to be hardware related.
The smartphone turns on, but the screen does not
It is quite possible that your phone seems to be off, but that the screen is defective. If this is the case, the device will be good for a return to the after-sales service, but, in the meantime, you might as well identify the fault. In the same way as in the previous step, you will keep your finger pressed on the Power button in order to force the device to turn off. Then wait a few seconds and then turn it on again. If it is only your screen that is out of order and does not turn on again, then you will feel a vibration or hear a sound which will notify you that the device is starting up.
Check that the smartphone has not taken in water
It might sound silly, but unless we're waterproof, our mobile devices fear water and sometimes it only takes a few drops to damage them. A glass spilled on a table, an environment that is too humid and the damage can be substantial. If ever this is the case, there are still solutions before you go to the after-sales service, provided you react quickly. For this, we invite you to consult our tutorial on how to save a smartphone that has fallen in water.
Perform a factory reset via recovery
This is not the ideal solution, but it may be the only one if your smartphone has a tendency to crash as soon as the system starts. A scenario that will still remain quite rare unless, of course, you have hacked it a little too much. Most of the time, the device will get stuck on the start screen. If it ever does, here's what to do.
- Turn off your phone or tablet
- Enter recovery mode. For this you must use a combination of several keys and this will differ depending on the model of your device (On the Samsung Galaxy S7, for example, you have to simultaneously and long press the Volume Up + Home + Power keys, on the Nexus 6P, these are the Power and Volume down keys which must be pressed before selecting the recovery via a menu) To find the combination corresponding to your device, go to our forum.
- Select option wipe data / factory reset and validate
- After a few minutes, your Android smartphone will be like new
