Aesthetically, (almost) nothing changes

The first time I saw Oppo Reno Z I thought: "But it is the same as the classic Reno!" but no. There is a difference and it is quite substantial: iIn fact, the new Chinese device renounces the shark fin that in the older brothers housed the front camera and the ear capsule. So let's go back to a slightly more traditional aesthetic, with a small central notch that goes to embed itself in the 6,4-inch AMOLED display. The latter is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, integrated inside a quick fingerprint reader (but you can also use the face unlock) and gives an excellent user experience, with realistic colors, excellent viewing angles and excellent brightness.

Finally, the dimensions and the frame are different: the first are slightly more generous, while the second is in polycarbonate and no longer in metal. The rest is rather unchanged: on the back we have theO-Dot, the ceramic sphere that keeps the smartphone slightly raised to protect the double rear camera, while on the right profile we have the on / off button - with a splendid green groove in the center - and on the left the two dedicated volume buttons. On the lower side we have the speaker, the USB-Type-C input, the microphone and the 3,5 mm jack.

Finally, we have some news from the point of view of colors: Oppo Reno Z proposes the Jet Black of its brother but replaces the Ocean Green with an eye-catching Aurora Purple. It goes without saying that with the latter you will certainly not go unnoticed.

Everything is different under the body

To distinguish the latest device of the family from the classic Oppo Reno is above all the hardware: no Qualcomm processor for him but a MediaTek Helio P90, a 2,2 GHz octa-core flanked by 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, unfortunately not expandable.

The threesome performs surprisingly well: the system is sufficiently reactive and fluid, able to carry out any activity, including gaming sessions. At the disposal of gamers then there is also technology Hyper Boost 2.0, designed to optimize background processes for better performance. Finally, don't forget it Game Space, that blocks unwanted banners and activates a dedicated bar so you have the main settings at your fingertips.

Finally we find on board Android 9.0 Pie with ColorOS 6.0, accurate and efficient, e a full-bodied 4035 mAh battery, which helps you make it to the end of the day without difficulty even with more intensive use. And if you are not used to mistreating your smartphone, know that with this battery you can cover almost 2 days peacefully.

Change the front camera

The double rear sensor is actually the same as Oppo Reno: therefore we find a Sony IMX586 at 48 megapixels - which takes 12 megapixel images by interpolating four pixels into one - e a secondary 5 megapixel sensor which takes care of the depth and, consequently, the bokeh effect. The result is the same seen on the brother with good quality photographs, balanced colors and a night mode - call Ultra Night Mode 2.0 - which performs pretty well.

The videos are also identical, always in 4K and at 30 fps which yes, they are not bad at all, but suffer from the absence of stabilization.

Finally change the front camera which reaches 32 megapixels. The result is not bad at all, albeit a bit waning in low light conditions.

Oppo Reno Z: buy it or not?

The baby of the family is actually well bodied: the design is still elegant, the MediaTek processor gives you all the power you need, the autonomy is excellent and the camera is really satisfying. Of course, there is no wow effect caused by the pop-up camera, but on the other hand you will not have to worry about the dust entering the shark fin mechanism and in addition you save 150 euros. Oppo Reno Z is in fact available at the price of 349 € and yes, it could be the real deal.
