For weeks now Italy has known the application immune, dedicated to contact tracing to contain the contagion from COVID-19. However, this is not the only European case, quite the contrary. Selectra, a web company dedicated to connectivity, analyzed the various proposals of the Old World, to assess the current situation.
The Immune and European Sisters app
There are several proposals in many countries of our continent. From Spain to Germany, passing through Austria, France, Portugal and Ireland, many have developed their own contact tracing app. Despite the differences between each, the basic concept is the same: to trace all the backward contacts of those who tested positive for the virus, especially those met by chance.
Therefore, the budget, the launch period, the name and often the penetration rate change, but the principle is similar. Via Bluetooth, these applications exchange encrypted signals when two devices cross, without the need to share owners' personal data. It is about randomized strings, which cannot be traced back to specific persons, nor are they communicated to anyone. Through these it is therefore possible to trace all the contacts of the person, creating a map of the possible infected.
Despite the similarities, however, the public reaction was very different in different countries. The most sensational case is that of NHS COVID-19, launched from the UK just a few days ago and already reached 12,5 million downloads. To characterize it, the presence of additional useful functions, such as the assessment of the risk level of a specific area, a counter for quarantine, the reservation of a free tampon and access to any results. Even more recent it is Coronalert, arrived only on 30 September and already downloaded by 5% of Belgians.
In Spain the contact tracing application only officially arrived on September 15 but accelerated rapidly, achieving results similar to those of Immuni. However, the public does not seem to appreciate it, with many negative reviews on the Stores. The distribution will also be helped by the presence of the app among those included in the basic Apple and Android operating systems.
Ups and downs around Europe
Even in Portugal in a few weeks the contact tracing application has reached Immune levels or almost, but this is not the highest figure. The Irish COVID Tracker for example, it has the penetration record with already 26% of the population having downloaded it. This despite the fact that it also collects (on a voluntary basis, it should be emphasized) also personal data such as gender, age and IP address. Also excellent Corona warning app in Germany, with a penetration rate of 22% and an average review rating of 4,4 out of 5 stars.
The results are not exceptional Austrians, with only one million downloads despite being among the first to arrive on the stores. The French situation is even worse with the app StopCovid discharged only by 3,5% of the population, with a large one distrust of the public also shared by political elites.
One problem that will need to be overcome as soon as possible is that of compatibility between different apps. In fact, the services do not communicate with each other and this entails the need to download local software in case of trips abroad.
