The standard Galaxy S21 and S21 + offer better recording of slow motion videos at 960 fps than the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Indeed, the two most affordable variants of the range offer a true recording mode at 960 frames per second. For its part, the most upscale model of this new generation is content to digitally improve sequences shot at 480 fps.
This Thursday, January 14, 2021, Samsung lifted the veil on the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra. Unsurprisingly, the S21 Ultra offers a better overall experience thanks to a more premium technical sheet and a handful of new features.
Among the flagship assets of the Ultra version, we find a main photo sensor of 108 megapixels, compatibility with the S-Pen stylus, a larger battery (5000 mAh), a WQHD + screen with a refresh rate of 120hz and finally, a laser autofocus.

On the other hand, the S21 Ultra does not have a mode ofSlow motion video recording in native 960 frames per second, report our colleagues from Android Police on January 19, 2021. By exploring the technical sheet published on the official Samsung website, the media discovered a mention explaining the limits of the smartphone in this area.
“With the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, users can record around one second of video at 480 frames per second and digitally enhance video to 960 frames per second with around 32 seconds of playback,” Samsung explains on its website.
Concretely, the terminal will be based on digital processing to fill the gaps of the 108 megapixel module. Samsung's processing algorithms will artificially create duplicates of the captured images in order to create an illusion. This process increases the risks of encountering image defects (blur, etc.). However, quality software processing can be as efficient as native mode.
Contacted by Android Police, Samsung explains the absence of native slow motion 960 fps by the limitations of the 108 megapixel photo sensor. This huge photo sensor operates at a slower shutter speed when recording video, says the manufacturer.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S21 and S21 + do offer a native slow motion recording mode in 960 frames per second, without digital processing. “With the Galaxy S21 5G and S21 Plus 5G, users can record approximately 0,5 seconds of video at 960 frames per second with approximately 16 seconds of playback,” says Samsung on its site. Rather than placing artificial limits on the cheaper S21s, Samsung decided to use “frame rate conversion” algorithms to bridge the gap between the latter and the S21 Ultra.
Obviously, this is only a detail. On a daily basis, the use of slow motion mode with 960 fps remains anecdotal. Note that the launched Galaxy S20 Ultra suffered from the same limitation. What do you think of Samsung's approach? We await your opinion in the comments.
