Arctic Freezer 50 review: the heat advances, but we don't fear it

“What a beautiful summer. The sun, the burning PC, the heat, the burning PC, the sea, the burning PC .. "
Here's how to summarize summer for a gamer in a few words. A beautiful season, of course, but with a huge problem: high temperatures.
Since the heat advances inexorably, it's time to take some precautions for our PC too. Having the lowest possible temperature is essential to better face the scorching sun. Lots of brands offer their solutions, but which one will be the best? Today we had the pleasure of having the new Arctic Freezer 50 heat sink. It is a solution to air quite bulky, but very effective. The huge heatsink is perfect for both platforms Intel and AMD: maximum compatibility on all fronts.

Will the Arctic Freezer 50 be able to hold its own against the other solutions in our possession? Without further ado, let's find out how he performed. Arctic Freezer 50 review: the heat advances, but we don't fear it

  • Dissipatore Arctic Freezer 50
  • Thermal paste MX-4, 0.8 g
  • Mounting screws and accessories

Size matters

What immediately catches the eye giving a first quick look at theArctic Freezer 50 is its size. Opening the package, in fact, we are faced with a solution massive and decidedly bulky. It is in fact a dissipation system a Double Tower, compatible with AMD Ryzen Threadripper and Intel home processors with Socket 1200, 115X, 2066 and 2011 (-3).

The heatsink is basically composed of three main elements: a double tower base structure, a central and a side fan. A part of the radiator is then covered by a small plastic cover which serves to give symmetry to the product.

Looking at the radiator more closely, we can see that the two towers are not exactly the same size. They are the same high and wide, but the thickness is slightly different. However, both have 52 aluminum fins.
La the lower part, the one in contact with the CPU, is made of anodized aluminum.

The last aesthetic highlight are the RGB LEDs that illuminate both the upper logo and two side strips. The central fan features a 4-pin PWN cable splitter for you to connect the two fans together, along with a 5-pin ARGB 3V connection.

    Installation is anything but simple

Inside the package we find a QR code which, if scanned, will allow us to open the support page that shows the instructions for installation. This is anything but simple. Given the large size, in fact, it will be necessary to disassemble some parts in order to fix the heatsink to the processor.

The assembly will be slightly different between Intel and AMD, but the procedure is basically similar. In order to insert the Arctic Freezer 50 into our configuration, it will be necessary to remove its central part. Before installation we will have to screw the two brackets to the support system on the motherboard. Once this step is done and the thermal paste has been placed, we can move on to installation on the CPU. To do this we will have to screw the screws from the central space and, once finished, hook it again. In short, a somewhat cumbersome passage.

Also, the size of the heatsink they gave us a lot of problems with the RAM. In our particular configuration it was necessary to remove a bank of RAM in order to complete the installation.

How did this Arctic Freezer 50 behave?

But we come to performance del nostro Arctic Freezer 50. Unfortunately we have not had the opportunity to test it on an AMD CPU, but we have stressed it on ours CPU Intel i7-8700K. After having performed several tests we then compared the results obtained with some heatsinks in our possession. Without going too far, let's let the numbers talk a bit.

The temperatures were measured using the software AIDA 64 during one stress test con Prime 95. The configuration included in detail:

      • I7-8700K, @4.9GHz
      • GTX 1070
      • ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D60G (16GB)
      • MSI Gaming M5

The performance of the Arctic home cooler was excellent compared to its air competitors. With the'Arctic Freezer 50, the processor got indeed a maximum temperature of 86 ° C, against 88 ° C for Noctua NH-D15 and 91 ° C for BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 4.

In idle the heatsink proved to be very stable, always guaranteeing an average temperature around 35°C. Arctic Freezer 50 review: the heat advances, but we don't fear it

Arctic Freezer 50: will it suit us?

The Arctic Freezer 50 heatsink is an excellent solution in terms of temperatures: compared to its air rivals it proved to be the best. The temperatures recorded were definitely performing both in idle and under stress.
Its problem, however, are dimensions and installation. As for our test, in fact, we had to remove a bank of RAM. Alternatively, having low-profile RAM and raising the side fan a little, it will be possible to proceed with the installation without necessarily having to remove a bench.
Certainly a performing product, but with a considerable size.
