Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, to most people known simply as Alone in the Dark 4, is a video game published by Infogrames in 2001 for various platforms including the Nintendo GameCube.
Fourth installment in the Alone in the Dark series, the game is a classic survival horror / adventure set in Shadow Island, an imaginary location characterized by the presence of moorland, forest, a mansion, an underground laboratory, a chapel, caves and even a parallel dimension called the World of Darkness. The first scene shows Edward Carnby who examines some posts, concerning a murder case, hanging on the walls of the apartment where he lives. Charles Fiske, his best friend and private investigator, however, is found dead near Shadow Island, owned by the Morton family for over 200 years.
Carnby begins to investigate and his investigations lead him to Fredrick Johnson, agent of Bureau 713, a sort of detective agency founded at the beginning of the twentieth century. Born with the aim of intercepting the communists, this agency has treated and still treats cases related to the paranormal and black magic. From here begins an adventure centered on three wooden tablets that belonged to a mysterious Native American civilization.
