Weapon abilities are great, but what you really want are damage buffs. Quenching acid is a key component used to increase the damage of a particular weapon. Weapons can deal up to +5 damage, for a maximum of five extinguishing acids. There are a lot more than five, so you can completely upgrade multiple weapons if you want.
Getting +5 damage and all weapon abilities can be done early. If you're growing for tar, you can get two Easy Quench Acid items from the Fallgrim Tower vendor - but they don't really need to be purchased. Learn where to find all of the weapon upgrades you missed below.
Weapon upgrade slots
There are two types of key weapon upgrade items: smothering acid and key weapon ability items. Tempered Acid upgrades the weapon you apply it to, making it more potent up to a maximum of +5.
Key item upgrades unlock weapon abilities for each weapon. Weapon abilities cost in resolve and are activated by pressing [[L1 + R1]or[[L2 + R2]. These powers give you frames of invincibility, and they're very powerful against annoying enemies or bosses.
Sacred Sword Upgrade Locations
- Mechanical pick: Fallgrim - In front of the Fallgrim tower, there is a large cave with a boss monster called Grisha. Defeat him and loot the chest inside to get the Mechanical Spike.
- Gain a mighty [[L1 + R1] attack that spends Resolve.
- Molten tip: Fallgrim - In a Fish Chest, accessible only in Fog. The chest is located downstream from the Giant Frog NPC - look for a cave with a camp inside guarded by a Grisha miniboss.
- Unlocks another weapon ability. hurry[[L2 + R2] to activate it.
Smoldering Mass Upgrade Slots
- Foundry stone: Temple Grounds - To the right of the Monument of Ash entrance, follow the lower rocky path from the Bridge to a Grave. Interact with the Stone Coffin to get the Foundry Stone Upgrade.
- Gain a mighty [[L1 + R1] attack that spends Resolve.
- Awakened Stone: Monument of Ash - Past the dual-purpose Flame Knight you will reach a large bridge with a sarcophagus in the center. The key element is in this sarcophagus chest.
- Unlocks another weapon ability. hurry[[L2 + R2] to activate it.
Martyr's Blade Upgrade Slots
- Petrified hourglass: Abandoned Room - On the fork path near the stairs to the large undead monster, look along the right wall for a hole. Go up to discover a tomb with this material for the blade of the martyr.
- Gain a mighty [[L1 + R1] attack that spends Resolve.
- Radiant winter glass: Enshrined Sanctum - Follow the main path across the bridge and down the spiral staircase. At the bottom, there is a path that leads to a dead end guarded by a Viking knight and two undead. The chest contains this upgrade for the Martyr's Blade.
- Unlocks another weapon ability. hurry[[L2 + R2] to activate it.
Hammer and chisel upgrade locations
- Scented censer: Eternal Narthex - Use the left portal at the entrance to reach the massive building at the far end of the area. Turn around and go down the left stairs to find a strange altar guarded by several gunners. Eliminate the gunners and collect the key element behind the fire lever.
- Gain a mighty [[L1 + R1] attack that spends Resolve.

Mitigate Acid Weapon Damage Upgrade Slots
- Quench acid: Fallgrim Outskirts - To the left of the Temple Grounds entrance, walk past the burning effigy to a small camp overlooking a hole. There's a chest here containing a Quench Acid upgrade.
- Quench acid: Temple Grounds - In the Monument of Ash, take the stairs down and to the left. You will meet two infernal knights in this hallway. Defeat them and open the Iron Maiden on the right to get the Choking Acid.

- Quench acid: Abandoned room - At the fork path with the stairs straight ahead, go left and enter the cave guarded by the monster armed with spikes. Defeat him and open the chest to get this upgrade.

- Quench acid: Sanctum Enshrined - Where the two main paths meet from the start of the ice zone, you will reach a frozen cave in front of a monster armed with spikes. Inside this cave, look for a hole you can crawl into. There is a series of ghosts guarding a chest.
- Quench acid: Fallgrim - In a Fish Chest, only accessible after collecting the first [Gland] from a temple chieftain and unleashing the fog. The chest is located on the main path leading to the entrance gate of the Fallgrim Tower.
- Quench acid: Monument of Ash - At the first shortcut door, go right and pass the two knights shields. There is an Iron Maiden with this upgrade item near the next door.
- Quench acid x2: Fallgrim Tower - Two Quenching Acid upgrades are available for purchase from the Vlas Shop in Fallgrim Tower. They cost 2500 each.
- Quench acid: Eternal Narthex - Near the right lever with the scented censer, follow the path back to the entrance. After the shooter, there is a chest containing this upgrade.
- Quench acid: Dim Gate - On the way to Shifting Archive, you will walk over a huge broken bridge. On the ramp leading halfway there is a lower walkway that leads to this upgrade.
- Quench acid: Dim Gate - At the Dim Gate, you will use an elevator shortcut to get to the next level. On the opposite side there is a similar elevator area with broken floating platforms. Follow the platforms to a portal to reach a hidden quenching acid.
