In Fallout 76, your character has a chance to receive a mutation if he becomes Radiated. Many of these benefits have positive and negative effects. Some of these effects are worse than others, depending on how you build your character and what you want them to do. There are specific ways to receive mutations, how to keep them if you want to reap their benefits, and how to get rid of them if you don't want to deal with them with your character.
A great way to make sure your character doesn't receive any mutations is to wear protective gear like hazmat suits or gas masks. You want to wear them to reduce the chances of your character taking radiation damage.
How to get mutations in Fallout 76
Your character has a five percent chance out of five radiated hit points to mutate. You can increase your chances of receiving a transfer by doing the following:
- Consumption of food and radioactive fluids
- Standing near burnt corpses
- Standing next to radioactive waste, areas devastated by nuclear weapons, irradiated creatures or anything else giving off radiation points

How to preserve and cure mutations
Each mutation has a positive and negative effect. However, if you find one on your character, you can gain the advantage of Starch Genes when you reach rank two. Otherwise, you can't keep a mutation. The perk prevents you from losing the mutation when using RadAway to remove radiation from your character.
If you want to cure the mutation, you can use RadAway without the benefit of the starch genes to eliminate one. However, you only have one chance of this happening. One definitive method of removing one from your character is to visit the Whitesprin Bunker to use the Contamination Chamber.
