It's perhaps less ubiquitous these days than Fortnite, but PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was truly the first great battle royale game. You can think of him as the majestic grandfather of the genre, compared to Fortnite's status as the explosive (and incredibly lucrative) kid. That said, a lot of people still gravitate towards PUBG for a more realistic tone and simpler gameplay.
Like many games, you can trick your character with an assortment of PUBG outfits and items. No outfit offers any explicit bonuses (stat boosts or whatever), but outfits make the difference in this game, especially when it comes to survival. They play a bit more of a role than something purely cosmetic.
First of all, it should be noted that there are several ways to get different PUBG outfit items. You can, of course, spend real money, but you can also get items with in-game currency and just playing the game, advancing your Battle Pass, and completing daily missions. However you choose your outfits, here are our recommendations on what to choose from your closet before you hit the battlefield.
Choose the right character
Before you even put on your pants, it has to be said: if you want to maximize your chances of winning a chicken dinner, you have to play as a female character model. In PUBG, female character models are smaller than male character models. This means that they offer less target area to be hit. You don't want to be hit. Ergo: play as a female character.
When it comes to dressing up, you won't want to keep fashion in mind. Well you are, but not in the traditional sense. It's not about looking cool, but rather strategizing not to be seen and subsequently filmed.
Choose the right outfit
There is a reason why so many PUBG players go for the ghillie suit when they can. This is one of the most ideal outfits you can wear when it comes to camouflage. This will make your character model a bit taller, but this downside is more than the fact that the ghillie costume is almost impossible to spot in some places.
You might not always want to look like a moldy trash can, but the idea behind the ghillie suit is more important: you want to dress in colors that blend in with the map you're playing. There are, of course, several different maps in PUBG.
- Erangel
- This map is grassy with a green, brown, and yellow color scheme. Wear appropriate colorful clothing or the ghillie suit.
- Casas Particulares Miramar, Havana
- This map is a desert with a yellow and brown color scheme. There is a desert ghillie suit, but there are also many options for wearing similar colored clothing.
- Weekends
- This map is snowy. If you want to truly excel, it is recommended that you set your character's skin tone as white as possible and go into battle naked. If this is not your jam, wear white / light clothing.
- Sanhok
- Like Erangel, this map also has a lot of grass, shrubs, and green colors. Similar outfits will work in this map with other earth tones.
- Karakin
- Like Miramar, this map is also located in a desert. Similar outfits will work on this map with other desert colors.
Of course, choosing outfits for each card takes an extra step of work. If you want to do your best to cover up, you're going to want to put in the effort. If you want general parts that work in multiple situations, here's what you'll want to do:
- Costume Ghillie!
- Dirty tank top
- Quilted jacket (urban)
- Combat pants (khaki)
- High sneakers
In general, earth tones can help keep you alive. That's the point of the game, after all, and you're going to be spending a lot of time pressed against the ground. Although the outfits are cosmetic, you can get various pieces of armor that can make you harder to kill.
Hairstyles
Beyond the ballistic mask (which actually doesn't provide any protection), you can acquire three levels of helmets.
- Level 1:80 durability, 30% damage reduction
- Level 2: 150 durability, 40% damage reduction
- Level 3: 230 durability, 55% damage reduction
Gilets
Likewise, you can acquire three levels of vests which will offer increasingly important advantages:
- Level 1: 200 durability, 30% damage reduction
- Level 2: 220 durability, 40% damage reduction
- Level 3: 250 durability, 55% damage reduction
Of course, some of those pieces of armor might get in the way of your fashion and camouflage choices. You're going to have to decide for yourself what works for the situation, but keep these tips in mind and do your best to stay alive!
