As previously stated, Valheim softens up some of the more difficult and time-consuming aspects of the survival genre. Repairing equipment is a common action in games like this, but it usually requires resources in exchange. That is not the case here. The prerequisites for starting to bring gear back to the all-new status are far from daunting.
How to repair in Valheim
Early-game items only require a Workbench to repair. Gather lumber, build the workbench, then surround it with walls and a roof to open up its full range of interactions. When using the Workbench, notice the hammer icon protruding from the Workbench list containing the “Craft” and “Upgrade” options.
On the mouse and keyboard, just click this icon. Using an Xbox controller, go to the Workbench with RB listing and click the right joystick to start the repair. The repair option will immediately identify all items in the player's inventory that have less than 100% durability. This may result in the need for multiple clicks if multiple items require special attention.
As mentioned, the Workbench addresses the need for repair early in the game, but it's not a fix forever. After progressing a bit, the Forge will become available. Ironwork from this workstation cannot be repaired on a workbench. This means that there will come a time when players harboring a combination of wood, leather, and metal will need to visit both the Workbench and the Forge in order to restore their inventory in combat form.
The last piece to remember is that workbenches and forges have levels, denoted by the number in the star. The level is dictated by the associated improvements. For example, building the cutting block and tanning stand will increase the workbench to level 3. Repairing the troll skin armor requires a level 3 workshop. Those who have set up multiple outposts will need to keep this in mind when venturing out, as workstations placed outside the main base may not meet the requirements necessary to initiate repairs if they have not been visited for some time.
Keep this information in mind and your Viking will never find himself repelling a Gray Dwarf attack as a naked pugilist.
