story
As with most dungeon crawlers, the story is pretty straightforward. You play a budding adventurer, you choose the name, and you set off on discovery and learning new skills. An ancient wizard introduces you to the world and he points out the ever-changing dungeons that you need to go through and clear of all enemies.
gameplay">gameplay
This is where the game really shines. Elemental Dungeon is categorized as a spooky adventure game, but the mechanics are totally innovative and unique. As the title of the game suggests, you play with elementals, combining them to form powerful spells and skills. It still doesn't seem to describe enough of how deep you can get when you master the skills.)
Namely, you can enter different items during your travels, choosing to keep only three. They are earth, fire and water. Each of them provides you with basic skills, like throwing fireballs, water shields, putting out fire, and creating barricades from Earth. But, they can also all be combined with each other to produce up to 6 spell combinations. For example, fire and earth give you a meteor shower spell. Additionally, you can also learn new spells from scrolls and by upgrading items.
However, and this is where the game asks for your skill, you only keep one item or combination of items selected while you shuffle them as you go. As soon as you release the convert button, the elements return to their original shape, or at least the basic shape you own. You can also use essence to upgrade your elements, producing larger spells and different manifestations. All these elements are then, as explained before, mixed up as you move around, when you dodge projectiles and fight monsters, which gives the game an unusual and dangerous look and a high skill cap.
Graphic
Like all good roguelike games, 2D pixel art is the way to go, and Elemental Dungeon obliges. It gives the game a certain simple yet deceptive look. Also, the animations, spells and the overall feeling of the game are quite classic, reminiscent of fan favorites namely 2D Zelda games. And, on top of the alumni we all love and remember, it's a tall order.
Verdict
Elemental Dungeon offers random dungeons in a roguelike environment where the player must master innovative game mechanics to fully enjoy the title. It's deceptively simple with its 2D pixel art, but actually offers pretty high capture capacity and endless replayability. It's free and has engaging multiplayer modes to test your skills and strategy. All in all, it is quite a challenge to have a very rewarding experience.
